Roads and highways in Armenia

Roads and highways in Armenia – list of main roads, and conditions if known.

Main highways in Armenia – M roads. Signposting is barely adequate, not good. Exit and entry ramps are not always obvious or well signposted. They are not motorways like German autobahns, far from it. Border crossings with Turkey and Azerbaijan are closed, driving into Artsakh or Nagorno-Karabagh in a rental car is usually permitted but you’ll need a visa before going there (in 2012 anyway, probably won’t change soon).

  • M1 – Yerevan > Ashtarak > Talin > Maralik > Gyumri (Giumri) > Bavra > Georgia border.
  • M2 – Yerevan > Ararat > Vayk > Goris > Kapan > Kajaran > Meghri > Agarak > Iran border.
  • M3 – Magara (near Turkey border) > Vagharshapat > Ashtarak > Aparan > Spitak > Vanadzor > Stepanavan > Tashir > Gogavan > Georgia border. Road is single lane in each direction, sealed (mostly), good enough condition except for a few potholed sections.
  • M4 – Yerevan > Abovyan > Charentsavan > Hrazdan > Sevan > Dilijan > Ijevan > Azatamut > Kayan > Azerbaijan border. Good 4 lane highway between Yerevan and Sevan, single lane in each direction after that in ok condition, sealed.
  • M5
